Economic Freedom of North America

Economic Freedom of North America is an attempt to gauge the extent of the restrictions on economic freedom imposed by governments in North America. The index published here measures economic freedom at two levels, the subnational and the all-government. At the subnational level, it measures the impact on economic freedom of provincial and municipal governments in Canada and of state and local governments in the United States. At the all-government level, it measures the impact of all levels of government—federal, provincial/state, and municipal/local—in Canada and the United States. All 10 provinces and 50 states are included.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A Mexican national was executed Thursday for the rape-slaying of a teenager after the U.S. Supreme Court turned down an appeal to spare him that was supported by Mexico and the White House.

In his last minutes, Humberto Leal repeatedly said he was sorry and accepted responsibility.

"I have hurt a lot of people. ... I take full blame for everything. I am sorry for what I did," he said in the death chamber.

"One more thing," he said as the drugs began taking effect. Then he shouted twice, "Viva Mexico!"

Safelink Wireless phones-for-the-poor government program sends U.S. dollars to Mexican billionaire

For those of you unfamiliar with the government’s free cell phone for the poor scam, we’ll start off with this brief summary:

If you’re poor and if you’re already receiving certain other government benefits, you can get a free cell phone and some free minutes every month through a company called SafeLink. If you want more background, you can read about the Safelink cell phone giveaway here and here and here and here. The program is paid for by the Universal Service Fund with fees added to every phone bill in America.

It would be bad enough if the money for this program was being channeled to an American phone company, but now we’ve discovered that all those hidden “taxes” are ultimately going to América Móvil, a Mexican phone company.

Even worse, América Móvil is the world’s fourth largest cell phone company, which just happens to be owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim. In effect, you are being taxed to subsidize the world’s richest man.

Rationing Proposed at Cancun

The 2010 United Nations Climate Change Conference is currently being held in Cancún, Mexico. It runs from 29 November to 10 December. It has been stated that 194 countries are represented at the conference - which probably covers every country in the World. A number of the physicists and chemists from such respected scientific institutions as Oxford University and the Met Office attending the conference are agreed that the current plans to solve global warming are not enough. Seeking to "improve" on the 2009 Copenhagen resolution to keep temperature rise below 3.6F, the Cancun conference is seeking to legally obligate countries to cut emissions by 50 per cent by 2050 relative to 1990 levels. TX Gov. Perry Wants to Send Military Into Mexico

AUSTIN — GOP Gov. Rick Perry, who continues to insist he's not interested in the presidency, is nevertheless always ready to tell the federal government how to do a better job on such matters as border security — including indicating the U.S. should be open to sending military into Mexico to help fight the drug war.

Appearing on MSNBC on Thursday, Perry was asked, “Would you advocate military involvement in Mexico on the Mexico side of the border to help Mexico in this drug war?”

Perry answered: “I think we have to use every aspect of law enforcement that we have, including the military. I think you have the same situation as you had in Colombia. Obviously, Mexico has to approve any type of assistance that we can give them.

“But the fact of the matter is, these are people who are highly motivated with money. They are vicious. They are armed to the teeth. I want to see them defeated. And any means that we can to run these people off our border and to save Americans' lives we need to be engaged in.”

Mexican Assassins Headed to Arizona

Drug-smuggling gangs in Mexico have sent well-armed assassins, or "sicarios," into Arizona to locate and kill bandits who are ambushing and stealing loads of cocaine, marijuana and heroin headed to buyers in the U.S., the Department of Homeland Security has warned Arizona law enforcement authorities.

In a memo first sent in May but widely circulated since, the department said a group of "15, very well-equipped and armed" assassins complete with body armor had been sent into the state to identify, locate and kill the drug thieves, who are thought to be independent operators.

"We just received information from a proven, credible confidential source who reported that a meeting was held in Puerto Penasco, in which every smuggling organization who utilizes the Vekol Valley was told to attend," the memo said. "This included rival groups within the Guzman cartel."

Mexican mayors blame increased border violence on U.S.

A coalition of mayors from four northern Mexican cities are asking U.S. authorities to stem the deportation of illegal immigrants convicted of serious crimes on the American side of the border.

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders joined the mayors of Tijunana, Ciudad Juarez, Nogales and Nuevo Laredo last week to discuss cross-border issues. Among them, the Mexcian mayors complained that America’s deportation of convicted criminal illegal immigrants back to the Mexican border is contributing to the recent rise in violent crimes, including kidnapping and other crimes related to the drug trade.
