George Soros Tied to Over 30 Major News Organizations

When liberal investor George Soros gave $1.8 million to National Public Radio , it became part of the firestorm of controversy that jeopardized NPR’s federal funding. But that gift only hints at the widespread influence the controversial billionaire has on the mainstream media. Soros, who spent $27 million trying to defeat President Bush in 2004, has ties to more than 30 mainstream news outlets – including The New York Times, Washington Post, the Associated Press, NBC and ABC.

Prominent journalists like ABC’s Christiane Amanpour and former Washington Post editor and now Vice President Len Downie serve on boards of operations that take Soros cash. This despite the Society of Professional Journalists' ethical code stating: “avoid all conflicts real or perceived.”

This information is part of an upcoming report by the Media Research Centers Business & Media Institute which has been looking into George Soros and his influence on the media.

The investigative reporting start-up ProPublica is a prime example. ProPublica, which recently won its second Pulitzer Prize, initially was given millions of dollars from the Sandler Foundation to “strengthen the progressive infrastructure” – “progressive” being the code word for very liberal. In 2010, it also received a two-year contribution of $125,000 each year from the Open Society Foundations. In case you wonder where that money comes from, the OSF website is www.soros.org. It is a network of more than 30 international foundations, mostly funded by Soros, who has contributed more than $8 billion to those efforts.

The Jerusalem Post has the details:

Palestinians who work in settlements in the West Bank are paid twice as much as those who are employed by other Palestinians, according to figures released on Thursday by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics.

According to the Statistics Bureau, the nominal daily median net wage of Palestinians who worked in the West Bank was NIS 76.9 in 2010, while those who were employed in settlements received NIS 150 per day.

The bureau’s Labor Force Survey showed that the Palestinian unemployment rate in the West Bank last year stood at more than 17%, while in the Gaza Strip it reached almost 38%.

Earlier this month, the bureau found that poverty in the Palestinian territories was less prevalent than previously believed. Slightly more than one out of four people lived below the poverty line last year.

Dani Dayan, who heads the Council of Jewish Communities of Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip, welcomed reports of an increase in Palestinians workers in the settlements.

“It is a positive thing both for Israelis and for the Palestinians,” he said.

“I think the reality of fruitful coexistence that [PA Prime Minister] Salam Fayyad tried to undermine is stronger than his boycott plan,” Dayan said. “The only way to promote peaceful coexistence is through cooperative endeavors.”

Seven years after then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld called the broadcaster’s reporting “vicious, inaccurate and inexcusable” and President George W. Bush joked about bombing it, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton praised it as “real news” in her recent Senate testimony.

Not only that, her staffers, as well as those of the CIA and the Obama White House, were attending the Congressional Correspondents’ Dinner as Al-Jazeera’s guests.

“They are a really important media entity, and we have a really great relationship with them,” said Dana Shell Smith, the State Department’s deputy assistant secretary for international media engagement, who speaks Arabic and has frequently appeared on the channel. “This administration has empowered those of us who actually do the communicating to be in a close relationship with Al-Jazeera. They understand that the relationship can’t consist of complaining to each other about the differences we have.”

USA Today: Banning Incandescent Light Bulbs is Freedom

In a leap of Orwellian logic, USA Today — America's second-largest newspaper — argues in its lead editorial Tuesday that banning the incandescent light bulb is a victory for free markets.

"The best way for government to boost energy efficiency isn't to micromanage by picking winners and losers, a job better suited to free-market innovation. It is to set a reasonable standard — miles per gallon or light per watt, for example — and let the market sort it out," spins the editorial in support of picking winners and losers. "That's what Congress did in 2007" in banning the bulb.

War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. Banning is choice. Regulation is freedom.

One wonders if USA Today's editors would tolerate this doublethink if applied to their own industry. Were Congress to ban newspapers in order to force them onto the more "planet-friendly" Internet, would USA Today swallow this as free market economics?

The Toyota Death Panel

Remember when our Toyotas went all “Maximum Overdrive” and tried to wipe us out last year? Defective automobiles would suddenly accelerate without warning, putting the lives of helpless passengers on the line. The media and government went ballistic. War was declared on Toyota, complete with congressional hearings.

Toyota wound up halting sales on eight of its most popular models, including the Camry, one of the best-selling cars in the United States. The New York Times reports the company paid $48.8 million in fines, and saw its sales drop 0.4 percent in 2010.

It turns out these cases of “sudden acceleration” were not defects in Toyota automobiles at all. After a 10-month investigation, the government concluded the incidents were mostly caused by floor mats interfering with the accelerator pedal, and drivers accidentally hitting the gas instead of the brakes.

Coincidentally, the same government that tried to burn Toyota at the stake over a manufactured “crisis” just happens to own a competing auto company. No need to worry, because back when Ray LaHood was warning consumers not to touch the Killdozers lurking in their garages, a White House flack assured CBS News that the government’s stake in General Motors “would not have any impact on this Administration's commitment to making sure that Americans are kept safe on our roads.”

The Toyota scare was just the latest in a long series of orchestrated crises, in the tradition of the Alar scam of the 1980s, or DDT hysteria before that.

The vindication of Toyota should be a huge story. It involves millions of dollars in damage to a private-sector corporation, the suppression of exculpatory evidence, and a swarm of parasitic lawyers. Instead, the news is treated like the correction to a minor spelling error in yesterday’s horoscope section of the newspaper.

Gay "Glee" actor Chris Colfer and his boyfriend on the show, Darren Criss, lovingly put their heads together on the cover. Colfer just won a Golden Globe for his part, which is another way the Hollywood press rewards propagandizing the youth of America. In his acceptance speech, he lamented anyone who would say a discouraging word about teen homosexuality, somehow putting all of those words in mouths of bullies: "Screw that, kids!"

In Indonesia a mob of 1,000 Muslims burned down two Christian churches because, according to one commentator, local Islamic authorities determined there were “too many faithful and too many prayers.” In Iran, scores of Christians have been arrested. In Pakistan, a Christian woman received the death penalty for the “crime” of insulting Islam; the governor of Punjab promised to pardon her — and was then assassinated for the “crime” of blasphemy.

For the past two years, Democratic officials, liberal activists and journalists have jumped to libelous conclusions about individual shooting sprees committed by mentally unstable loners with incoherent delusions all over the ideological map. In April 2009, a disgruntled, unemployed loser shot and killed three Pittsburgh police officers in a horrifying bloodbath. The gunman, Richard Poplawski, was a dropout from the Marines who threw a food tray at a drill sergeant and had beaten his girlfriend. Was this deranged shooter who pulled the trigger to blame? Nope. Despite evidence that Poplawski's homicidal, racist tendencies manifested themselves years before Obama took office, lefty publications asserted that the real culprit of the spree was the "heated, apocalyptic rhetoric of the anti-Obama forces" (according to mainstream liberal Atlantic Monthly pundit Andrew Sullivan), along with Fox News and Glenn Beck (according to mainstream liberal journalist Steve Benen of the Washington Monthly online).
