Fareeda's fate: rape, prison and 25 lashes

In spring 2005 Fareeda was raped by her family's neighbor, a postman, and his teenage son. She fell pregnant - and later miscarried - as a result. Her mistake was to tell her parents. With their consent, under Pakistan's orthodox Islamic laws, she was charged with fornication outside marriage and sentenced to 100 lashes, later reduced to 50 and then 25 because of her age, and sent to jail. After four months her prison ordeal ended when a family friend secretly paid a bribe. Her plight is not unique.

Mexican mayors blame increased border violence on U.S.

A coalition of mayors from four northern Mexican cities are asking U.S. authorities to stem the deportation of illegal immigrants convicted of serious crimes on the American side of the border.

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders joined the mayors of Tijunana, Ciudad Juarez, Nogales and Nuevo Laredo last week to discuss cross-border issues. Among them, the Mexcian mayors complained that America’s deportation of convicted criminal illegal immigrants back to the Mexican border is contributing to the recent rise in violent crimes, including kidnapping and other crimes related to the drug trade.

Anti-Austerity Protests Sweep Across Europe

Anti-austerity protests erupted across Europe on Wednesday — Greek doctors and railway employees walked off the job, Spanish workers shut down trains and buses, and one man even rammed a cement truck into the Irish parliament to protest the country’s enormous bank bailouts.

All the actions sought to protest the budget-slashing, tax-hiking, pension-cutting austerity plans of European governments seeking to control their debt.

"Taxpayers Have an ‘Obligation’ to Fund Abortions"

Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., not only believes that women should be able to choose whether or not to terminate a pregnancy, but also favors a full repeal of existing federal policy which limits taxpayer funding for abortions. According to the Illinois Democrat, “there’s no evidence” that increasing access to abortion services encourages people to get abortions.
