Just a brief exposure to an image of the American flag shifts voters, even Democrats, to Republican beliefs, attitudes and voting behavior even though most don't believe it will impact their politics, according to a new two-year study just published in the scholarly Psychological Science.
What's more, according to three authors from the University Chicago, Cornell University and Hebrew University, the impact had staying power.
"A single exposure to an American flag resulted in a significant increase in participants' Republican voting intentions, voting behavior, political beliefs, and implicit and explicit attitudes, with some effects lasting 8 months," the study found. "These results constitute the first evidence that nonconscious priming effects from exposure to a national flag can bias the citizenry toward one political party and can have considerable durability."

A liberal University of Iowa sex professor has a message for the school's conservatives: F--- YOU!
Professor Ellen Lewin said as much in a response to a mass email from a campus Republican group promoting "Conservative Coming Out Week."
In the email on Monday morning, the UI College Republicans called for conservatives in Iowa City to "come out of the closet" and promote right-wing values that week.
The events included a screening of the 2002 film "Journey's with George," in honor of George W. Bush, a "Red vs. Blue" kickball game and blood drive and an "Animal Rights BBQ."
Less than one minute after the email was sent, Lewin fired back a blistering response: "F-YOU, REPUBLICANS."

"Looks like Democrats are getting ready to dust off the old “baby killer” insult and try it out on Republican budget cutters. We haven’t really heard that one since the war in Vietnam was winding down, so we’d have to say it’s long overdue." - I Hate The Media
by Josh Rogin
As Congress struggles to negotiate a budget deal to keep the government running, the head of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) told lawmakers Wednesday that the GOP version of the budget bill would result in the deaths of at least 70,000 children who depend on American food and health assistance around the world.
"We estimate, and I believe these are very conservative estimates, that H.R. 1 would lead to 70,000 kids dying," USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah testified before the House Appropriations State and Foreign Ops subcommittee.

Resolution on the November 2, 2010 midterm election — "All hands on deck to defend and extend our gains"
...therefore be it Resolved, That the Communist Party USA is committed to joining in the broad all-peoples' coalition to defeat the ultra-right in the mid-term elections and help elect more pro-people, pro-labor, pro-immigrant rights, pro-peace candidates including members of our own Party running for election or reelection.
That voter education on life-and-death issues of jobs, health care, and preserving the homes of millions from foreclosure will be key to victory. The Party should produce our own "People Before Profits" election platform for mass circulation.
That we will join or, when necessary, initiate voter registration drives to enroll new voters.
That we urge Districts, Clubs, and Party members to volunteer to phonebank, go door-to-door, travel to battleground states. That victory depends above all on an effective "get-out-the-vote" campaign in the lead up to the election and on election day, November 2. That this mobilization needs "street heat" to fire up the people.
That our clubs participate in the 2010 elections through coalition work that builds a solid base for the struggle after the elections. Clubs should target organizations and key neighborhoods for signing up readers to the People's World/Mundo Popular and new Party recruits strengthening both the CPUSA and the unity and action of the people's movements.

Marxist Democrats Cringe As Russian Immigrants
Compare Communism to…Democrats!
by Tom Wrobleski
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Many Russian immigrants to the "red borough" of Staten Island are flocking to the Republican Party, saying that the national Democrats' "socialistic" policies remind them too much of the top-down oligarchy they fled in their native land.
With many of the borough's Russian arrivees already owning businesses and active in civic organizations, their muscle could help the Island GOP solidify electoral gains made this year, when the party took back congressional and Assembly seats.
"We decided we had to support this club," said Fridman, a former Soviet Army officer who came to the United States in 1992. "They are very close to our political and business vision."
Fridman said that the Democrats "are going in an absolutely different direction," focusing on "income redistribution" and rich-versus-poor "class war."
"It's too socialistic," said Fridman, head of the non-profit Staten Island Community Center and president of Citizens Magazine, a public affairs publication. "It's very painful for us to see."
